Description
Feeding recommendation:
For smaller colonies, mealworms can be offered freshly chopped or frozen. Even when frozen, slicing is recommended to help ants access the soft, nutrient-rich inner parts more easily. Adult colonies can be fed live mealworms, but only if they can handle them. Keep in mind that live feeding may stress more sensitive species, not all ants are capable hunters, and if there is soil in the farm, the mealworm may burrow into it, making capture difficult.
Storage:
Mealworms are hardy and can last a long time—up to 3–5 months refrigerated. However, they gradually lose nutritional value over time. If you do not want to keep and feed them until use, you can freeze any excess. Ants also readily consume mealworm pupae, but not the adult beetles. Therefore, if keeping them alive, it is recommended to store them in a cool place to slow their development.
