Gnamptogenys bicolor

Description

This is a claustral, monogynous (single-queen) ant species which is 5-7 mm in size, with a red-black color and a stinger. Their sting is harmless to humans and only affects smaller insects. These ants are excellent climbers, even on vertical, slippery surfaces. The queen is difficult to distinguish from the workers, as they are very similar. If plenty of meat and high humidity are provided, they develop very dynamically. The colony population reaches only a few hundred workers, so there’s no risk of them overgrowing their space.

Feeding: Primarily insects, but they also consume small amounts of honey.

Reproduction: The colony reproduces slowly at first, raising a maximum of 25-35 workers in the first year, but by the third year, it may reach up to 100 workers. A mature colony consists of a few hundred workers.

Hibernation: This is a tropical ant species, so hibernation is not required.
