Description
The largest Pheidole species in the world! It is claustral an polygynous (with multiple queens), but does not necessarily require multiple queens, the colony can function properly with just one queen. It is a rapidly reproducing, territorial ant species. There are two significantly different worker castes. The minors are 4-5 mm in size, long-legged, and agile, so it is important to pay close attention to escape prevention, as they quickly find even the smallest gaps in the ant farms. The majors (or soldiers) are 8-9 mm in size, and their robust heads are often larger than their abdomens. Their strong bite allows them to chop up seeds or create an opening in the exoskeleton of insects, allowing the minors to consume the prey from the inside. The two castes can work together very efficiently, they can consume almost any food. They actively defend their territory. In addition to their strong bite, they use their stingers for defense. This is a capable and active species, recommended even for beginners, though minors require patience and care. Otherwise, they handle most issues on their own. Workers forage on the ground. The queen’s expected lifespan can reach up to 10 years. More information about a similar species can be found HERE!
Feeding: In addition to sugar or honey and insects, they can be fed seeds (seed mix + oily seeds like walnuts or peanuts).
Reproduction: They reproduce quickly with warmth. In the first year, they raise 30-50 workers, and by the second year, the colony may reach several hundred workers. In a fully developed colony, there can be thousands of workers. Offspring develop without a pupal cocoon, so the pupal stage is white and ant-shaped.
Hibernation: As a tropical ant species, hibernation is not required.
