Description
This is a smaller, striking, popular, clautsral and monogynous (single-queen) ant species. In their Southeast Asian habitat, they nest in semi-dry or moist forest soils. The queen is 8 mm long, while the workers range from 3-5 mm. Their thorax is red, the head darker, and their abdomen is black, with long hairs on their body, that’s why they are called as “hairy shield ants” in English-speaking regions. This is a relatively timid species, when threatened, they curl up and calmly wait for the danger to pass. Due to their calm behaviour, they can exist peacefully with other timid ant species in the same formicarium. The queen’s expected lifespan can reach up to 15 years.
Feeding: Sugar or honey, and insects.
Reproduction: They reproduce quickly in warm conditions. In the first year, they raise 20-30 workers, and in the second year, they can reach a population of several hundred workers. A mature colony grows to approximately 500-1000 workers.
Hibernating: As a tropical ant species, they do not require hibernating.
