Description
This is a monogynous (single-queen), claustral ant species from Southern Europe. In a mature colony, workers of various sizes can be found, but the species itself is monomorphic, meaning only one type of worker appears. The queen and the workers have a reddish-brown head and thorax, with a shiny black abdomen. The workers walk in line along paths marked by their pheromones. They reproduce quickly and can easily inhabit anything in the enclosure, making them suitable for placing in terrarium decorations. They tolerate dryness well and nest in areas without humidification. Although they are not a nervous species, but they defend themselves aggressively when attacked. In such cases, they raise their flexible, pointed abdomen and spray formic acid into the air, which allows them to defeat their attackers without any losses.
Feeding: Honey and insects, but occasionally oily seeds (walnuts, hazelnuts) are also recommended.
Reproduction: In the first year, they raise at most 25-40 workers, but from the second year on, the colony size can reach 100 workers. A mature colony consists of several thousand workers.
Hibernation: At 5-8°C, from the end of November to the end of March. For more information, see this video.
