Crematogaster rogenhoferi

Description

A small Asian ant species recommended even for beginners, which adapts well to various habitats. It is a polygynous species (multiple queens), but the colony can function properly with just one queen as well. Native to the tropical rainforests of Asia, in its natural habitat, it builds its nest at the tops of trees, on branches. To construct its distinctive, nest-like home, it uses soil, small pieces of wood, and other plant materials.

In farms or terrariums, they readily settle into various decorations and structures, with workers skillfully climbing on them and exploring the entire area in search of food. The independently founding queen and the workers are both brownish in color, but among the workers, the head and gaster are often darker than the thorax.

It is not an overly aggressive species, but if attacked, they resolutely raise their pointed gaster and spray formic acid at the attacker, allowing them to defend themselves without significant losses.

Feeding: Honey and insects, but occasionally oily seeds (walnuts, hazelnuts) are also recommended.

Reproduction: In the first year, they raise a maximum of 25–40 workers, but from the second year onward, the population can reach around 100 workers. A fully developed colony consists of several thousand individuals.

Hibernation: Hibernation is not necessary, but if they are kept warm, it is recommended to maintain room temperature for 2–3 months in winter so that the queen can rest.
