Cerapachys sulcinodis

Description

This is a large-sized, ground-nesting, claustral and monogynous (single-queen) ant species from Asia. In English-speaking regions, they are called “army ants.” They often attack the nests of other ants, and they steal larvae. The entire colony later feeds on this valuable prey. In addition to their strong bites, they also defend themselves with their stingers. Their appearance is quite unique, with both the queen and workers being slender and shiny black. They require high humidity, so we recommend coconut fiber or peat for the soil, to provide enough humidity. Springtails and isopods can also be installed into the soil to help prevent mite infections. They also consume chopped insects, which can be given in any size, and should be fed with honey-water, sugar-water, or honey-sugar water every 2-3 days. They cannot climb glass and slippery surfaces, but due to their high humidity requirements, it is not recommended to keep them in an open terrarium, as these dry out more easily than fully enclosed ones. Starting a colony from a queen is difficult, but easier with a small team. We still have little knowledge about them. Recommended only for experienced ant keepers!

Feeding: Honey and chopped insects.

Reproduction: The colony initially reproduces slowly and is difficult to start, but by the third year, they can reach a population of 100 workers. A mature colony consists of only a few hundred individuals.

Hibernation: Tropical species, does not require hibernation.
