Cataulacus granulatus

Description

This species is heavily armored, peaceful, and conflict-avoiding ant species. They are claustral, monogynous (single-queen) ants. They make their nests in trees and they are excellent climbers. In case of conflict, this ant curls up like a turtle (that is why thei nickname is „turtle ant”). If this tactic fails, this ant simply jump off the branch to escape from attackers. The colony only reaches a few hundred workers, so there is no need to worry about them outgrowing their space. It is quite rare spcies. Unfortunately, we know little about its care, so it is recommended for more experienced ant keepers!

Feeding: Honey and insects.

Reproduction: In the first year, they raise up to 10-15 workers, but from the second year, they can reach a population of 50-75 workers. A mature colony consists of a few hundred workers.

Hibernating: Tropical species, does not require wintering.
