Description
This species is recommended for beginners, monogynous (single-queen) and polymorphic. It has three worker castes (minor, media, major). Their appearance is quite striking, with both the queen and workers being bright yellow. Establishing a colony requires patience, but once the colony reaches around 25 workers, caring for them becomes much easier than in the initial stages. The mature colony’s population reaches only about a hundred workers, so there is no risk of them overgrowing their environment. They are timid compared to other ants, they avoid conflict and open battles. In nature, they nest in the soil under stones. Besides their strong mandibles, they defend themselves by spraying acid. They become more active and develop faster in warmer conditions. The queen’s lifespan can reach up to 10-15 years.
Feeding: Honey and insects.
Reproduction: The colony initially grows slowly, raising at most 15-30 workers in the first year, but by the third year, they can reach up to 100 workers.
Hibernating: Requires wintering at 15°C from November to February. For more information, check this video.
