Description
This is a rare, striking red variant of Camponotus rufoglaucus. This species is monogynous (single-queen)as well, has workers measuring 6-10 mm, establishing colonies of only a few hundred workers. They nest underground in wild. They are relatively shy but they find their necessary food even with smaller numbers. This polymorphic species has three worker castes: minor, media, and major. Since they do not form large colonies, they do not outgrow medium and large-sized ant farms throughout their colony’s lifespan.
Feeding: Honey and insects.
Reproduction: The colony reproduces slowly at first, raise at most 25-40 workers in the first year, but by the second year, they can reach a population of 100 workers. As a typical Camponotus species, the colony is shy when they have few workers, but once they reach a few hundred of workers, they become bolder and aggressively guard their territory.
Hibernating: They do not require wintering, but they do need a winter rest period. During this time, do not heat them directly; keep them at room temperature. During the resting period, continue to feed them as they remain active and continue to reproduce.
