Description
This is a non-hibernating ant species, measuring 7-10 mm, similar to the native Camponotus vagus, but with the difference that the rufoglaucus nests in the ground. This polymorphic species features three worker castes: minor, media, and major. It is a monogynous (single-queen) ant species, forming colonies of only a few hundred workers, that makes it suitable for medium to large-sized ant farms throughout its lifespan.
Feeding: Honey and insects.
Reproduction: The colony reproduces slowly at first, raise 25-40 workers in the first year, but by the second year, they can reach a population of 100 workers. As a typical Camponotus species, the colony is shy when they have few workers, but once they reach several hundred workers, they become bolder and aggressively guard their territory.
Hibernating: They do not require hibernation but do need a winter rest period. During this time, do not heat them directly, keep them at room temperature. Continue to feed them during the resting period, as they remain active and continue to reproduce.
