Camponotus pseudoirritans

Description

This is recommended for beginners, easy-to-keep Asian ant species. It is a popular choice for ant farms because, with a warm environment and sufficient food, it reproduces very quickly. Within a year, the colony can grow to 1000 workers, so they will require more space over time. This species is ideal for quickly populating larger terrariums! The queen is black and yellowish, while the workers are yellow. It is a monogynous (single-queen), claustral, polymorphic ant species, meaning it has three worker castes (minor, media, major). The workers are robust, strong, and resilient. Besides their strong mandibles, they defend themselves by spraying acid. They become more active and develop significantly faster when kept warm. They tolerate temporary drought well. They build their nests in the soil, often under rocks. The queen’s expected lifespan can reach 10-15 years.

Feeding: Honey and insects.

Reproduction: This is a highly prolific species. The colony grows quite rapidly even in the early stages, usually raise 5-15 workers in the first few months. Within a year, the colony can reach a population of 1000 workers. As is typical for Camponotus species, the colony is shy when it has only a few workers, but once their numbers reach several hundred, they become more confident and aggressively defend their territory.

Hibernation: This is a tropical ant species, so it does not require hibernation. However, during the winter months (approximately from November to February), it is not advisable to provide additional heating. Room temperature is recommended to avoid overwhelming the queen. During this period, they remain active and still require feeding.
