Description
This is a shy, heat-loving, glossy black ant species. It is monogynous (single-queen) and claustral, their colonies consists of a few hundred workers, so there’s no need to worry about them outgrowing their space. The species is polymorphic, with workers appearing in three different sizes (minor, media, major). In addition to their strong mandibles, they defend themselves by spraying acid. They nest in the soil and prefer open, sunny areas, with their nests having only one or a few entrances. Compared to other ants, they are timid, they avoid conflict and never engage in open fights. They do not guard their food sources, and workers forage alone. This hardy species can tolerate temporary water or food shortages. The queen’s expected lifespan can reach 10-15 years.
Feeding: Honey and insects.
Reproduction: The colony reproduces slowly at first, raising only 10-20 workers in the first year, but by the third year, they can reach a population of 100 workers. Major workers appear relatively early in this species.
Hibernation: At 5-8°C from the end of November to the end of March.
