Camponotus irritans

Description

This is an easy-to-keep Asian ant species. It is a popular choice for ant farms because with a warm environment and sufficient food, it reproduces very quickly. Within a year, the colony can reach up to 1,000 workers, so they require a large space over time. It’s an ideal species for quickly populating larger terrariums! The queen has a black-and-yellow coloration, while the workers are yellow. This is a monogynous (single-queen), claustral, polymorphic ant species, meaning it has three worker castes (minor, media, major). Its workers are robust, strong, and resilient. In addition to their powerful mandibles, they defend themselves by spraying acid. They become more active and develop much faster in warm conditions. They tolerate temporary drought well. The queen’s expected lifespan can reach 10-15 years.

Feeding: Honey and insects.

Reproduction: The colony growing quite quickly even in the early stages. Ideally, they raise 5-15 workers in the first few months. Within a year, the colony can reach a population of 1000 workers. Like other Camponotus species, the colony is shy while it has only a few workers, but as their numbers grow to several hundred, they become more confident and aggressively defend their territory.

Hibernation: This is a tropical ant species, so it does not require hibernation. However, during the winter months (approximately from November to February), it’s not advisable to provide additional heating. Room temperature is recommended to avoid overwhelming the queen. During this period, they remain active and still require feeding.
