Description
This is a monogynous (single queen), claustral, polymorphic species with three worker castes (minor, media, major). The workers are large, robust, strong, and resilient. Their have a striking appearance with a red head and thorax with a shiny black abdomen. In addition to their strong mandibles, they defend themselves by spraying acid. These ants are aggressive, and although their bite is strong, they are not dangerous to humans (unable to penetrate the human skin). They become more active and develop faster in warmer conditions. They establish colonies with several thousand workers. The queen’s lifespan can reach up to 10-15 years. Due to their slow initial reproduction, starting a colony from a queen requires a lot of patience, making this species more suitable for experienced keepers. However, once the colony reaches 20-25 workers, it can be recommended for beginners as well.
Feeding: Honey and insects.
Reproduction: The colony initially reproduces slowly, 25-40 workers are raise in the first year, but by the second year, they can reach a population of 100 workers. The colony is timid while they have only a few workers, but once they reach several hundred, the ants become bold and aggressively defend their territory.
Hibernating: As a tropical species, it does not require wintering.
