Aphaenogaster dulcineae

Description

This is a monogyn (single-queen), claustral species. The queen’s head and thorax are
brownish-black, and her abdomen is yellow. The workers are yellow, they have a special posture. In nature, they live
under rocks or deadwood, and prefer high humidity. Their workers have stingers, and they mainly
look for food at ground level, rarely climb higher. They are sensitive to fluctuations of humidity, so their
care is recommended for advanced keepers. In  dry environments, the
development of the colony slows down.

Food: In addition to honey and insects, you can occasionally provide them small amounts of
oily seeds (e.g., walnuts, peanuts, sunflower seeds) to provide them all the necessary nutrients.

Colony size: They reproduce slowly. In the first year, they raise
30-40 workers, and by the second year, they can reach population of a few hundred workers.
Mature colonies can be quite populous, with several thousand workers.

Hibernation: They require mediterranean hibernation from November to February at 15°C.
