Description
This monogynous (single-queen) Asian ant species is claustral. The queen has a brownish-black head and thorax, while her abdomen is black. The workers are brown and have a distinctive posture, as they hold their abdomen. In nature, they live under stones or dead wood, and prefer medium or high humidity. The long-legged workers can cover large areas and forage on the ground, rarely climbing higher. They actively modify their environment. They are recommended to be kept in larger formicariums, and their care is simple, making them suitable for beginners.
Feeding: In addition to honey and insects, they can occasionally be given small amounts of oily seeds (e.g., walnuts, peanuts, sunflower seeds) to provide all their nutritional needs.
Reproduction: Initially they reproduce slowly, but their reproduction rate increases over time. In the first year, they raise 30-40 workers, and by the second year, the number can reach up to several hundred. A mature colony consists of few thousand workers.
Hibernating: As a tropical species, they do not require wintering.
