Liometopum microcephalum

Description

An independently state-forming, monogynous (single-queen), wood-nesting ant species that establishes a rapidly growing colony with a large population. In mature colonies, the number of workers can reach up to 10,000. The queen measures 12-13 mm in length and is brownish-black, workers are 4-6 mm long, with red thoraxes and silver-shimmering abdomens. Two castes of workers are present. This is an active, aggressive, and highly territorial ant species. In their environment, they establish pheromone trails where workers move back and forth, like traffic on a busy highway. Their formic acid has a distinctive lemon scent. This species is found mainly in Europe, within the Carpathian Basin, but it is not well studied, so little is known about its lifestyle.

Feeding: Honey and insects.

Reproduction: The first generation usually consists of 30-50 workers. A successfully established colony requires ample food and warm temperatures, which enable them to reproduce explosively, potentially exceeding 100 workers within the first year. In mature colonies, thousands, even tens of thousands, of workers can develop, resulting in high space and food demands.

Hibernation: At 5-8°C, from late November to the end of March.
