Crematogaster biroi

Description

This a claustral, monogynous (single-queen) ant species that nests in the ground and climbs quite well. The workers are 2-3 mm in size, brilliantly yellow. They can spectacularly populate a formicarium. The queen size is 7-8 mm in length. This species have stinger, sprays its potent poison into the air with its characteristically raised abdomen when attacking. Crematogaster species are highly flexible, able to rotate their sting in nearly every direction. They are aggressive towards other ants. If the C. biroi is attacked, they prefer to retreat and leave their venom behind, escaping the conflict without losses. They establish colonies of only a few hundred workers, so they do not outgrow medium to large-sized ant farms during their lifetime.
Feeding: Honey and insects.
Reproduction: The colony initially reproduces slowly, raising 35-50 workers in the first year, but from the second year on, the colony size can reach 100 workers. The workers develop without a pupal cocoon, so the pupae are white and ant-shaped.
Hibernation: This is a tropical ant species, active during the whole year, and does not require hibernation.
