Description
Recommended only for experienced keepers! This species is polygynous, claustral, and is quite popular. The workers are yellowish-brown, with several castes, including very small and very large workers. The different sizes of workers are specialized for various tasks. They are active during the whole year and are particularly striking to observe as they carry leaves to their nest. A mature colony requires a lot of space, and it is recommended to place them in at least three separate enclosures connected by corridors (connecting tubes). The first enclosure should be humid, serving as the nesting area where they grow their fungi. The second enclosure should be medium humid, where they collect leaves; and the third enclosure should be dry, serving as their waste area. These three enclosures and connecting corridors are necessary for easier management and to prevent infections.
Leaf-cutter species: They cut up leaves from various plants and bring them into their nest, where they grow fungi. The ants consume this fungi, which provides all the necessary nutrients. It is important to offer them a variety of leaves, because they may not consume certain plants, and their preferences can change over time. Leaves they may accept include: firethorn, lettuce, privet, Japanese laurel, blackberry, raspberry, elderberry, linden, grapevine, crabapple, spindle tree, and rose. The ants themselves are relatively hardy, but the fungus is very sensitive, requiring stable conditions, high humidity, and a stable temperature. If the fungi dies, the ants will starve, so it is recommended to maintain them with a thermostatically controlled heating system to ensure a consistent temperature. Humidification should be provided with each feeding by spraying water.

Feeding: They consume the fungi they cultivate, which is fed with fresh leaves every 2-3 days.
Reproduction: They reproduce at a steady rate in warm conditions. A mature colony can reach up to 20,000 workers.
Hibernation: As a tropical species, they do not require hibernation.
