Acromyrmex octospinosus

Description

Recommended for practised ant keepers only! This species is polygynous (multiple queens), claustral, and popular. They have three worker castes, we can find quite small, and also large workers. The workers of various sizes specialized to different tasks. Their colour is yellowish brown. They are active in the whole year, and very spectecurlar to see them taking leaves into the nest. The mature colony needs quite large enclosure, recommended to provide them three different chambers at least , which are connected to each other with tubes. The first one is for their fungi, which is the nest part. The second one need to be humid as well, they take leaves from here. The third one is for waste. It sould be less humid to avoid infections.
Leaf-cutter species: they cut leaves of different plants, and take them into the nest, to grow their fungi. Ants feed on this fungi, which contains all the necessary nutrients. It is important to offer different leaves. Sometimes they may select, or prefer other kind of leaves. Prefered leaves: rose, lettuce, blackberry, raspberry, elderberry, privet, linden, grape, apple. Ants are tough, their fungi is extra sensitive, needs stable temperature and high humidity. If the fungi dies, ants die as well, so it is more important to keep the fungi alive. Recommended to keep it on a thermostat heating system, to provide stable conditions. We can keep humidity on that high level by spraying water every day.
